DIPLOMA IN COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY (DCP) in association with Marian College,Kuttikkanam (Autonomous)

Marian College Kuttikkanam Autonomous, the premier higher education institution of Kerala launches Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy (DCP)from 2020-21 academic year. The programme is to equip candidates to pursue a career in counselling and psychotherapy. This will also strengthen the skills of those working ascounsellors, administrators, teachers, leaders, social activists/social workers etc. to respond effectively in conflicting situations/behaviours.

The programme offers training in counselling and therapies spread under various courses such as developmental psychology, counselling skills, family and couple counselling,counselling children and adolescents, cognitive behaviour therapy, Jungian and Adlerian therapies, otherpsychotherapies etc. and covers all foundation courses in psychology and counselling. The programme includes practical training on counselling and therapies. Field practice/internship is embedded to the course curriculum in order to provide training and experience in counselling.

Objective of DCP

The objective of the Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy(DCP) is to equip the candidates with both theoretical knowledge and practice skills to identify, assess and intervene to help the clients to resolve their mental health issues.

Programme Specific Outcomes (PSOs) of DCP

The students who successfully complete the DCP will be able to:

  • Demonstrate professional and ethical behaviour in dealing with clients.
  • Assess mental health issues of clients and develop counselling and psychotherapeutic intervention plans to resolve those issues in counselling setting.
  • Make effective counselling and psychotherapeutic interventions for resolving the mental health issues of the clients making use of the appropriate theoretical and therapeutic approaches.
  • Evaluate the outcomes of the interventions made to address the mental health issues of the clients.
  • Conduct researches for the advancement of knowledge and practice in the field of mental health.

ADMISSION

Eligibility

Candidates possessing genuine interest and aptitude in counselling.

Candidates for admission to the DCP programme shall be required to have passed any undergraduate programme of any Universityrecognized by UGC.

Selection

Selection of candidates will be based on entrance test, group discussion and personal interview which shall be used to evaluate the suitability of the candidate for the Programme. The final rank list shall be prepared out of 150 marks. The relative weight for the components will be 50:50:50.

CERTIFICATE PROGRAM IN COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY

This program is designed to help candidates attain professional competency as an additional qualification for social workers, counselors. teachers administrators and other helping professionals. This is an outcome based program spread over six months (30 credits ) to obtain a certificate in counselling and Psychotherapy.

The College has already introduced outcome based education into the curriculum which ensures upskilling. The updating and enhancement of knowledge will happen through class room lectures, problem solving sessions, practicals, experimental activities, modelling and simulation, project, group discussion, presentation, quiz, assignments, peer teaching, peer learning, expert talks, seminars, workshops, online classes, industrial visits, research laboratory visits, outreach programmes, supervised field practicum etc.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The DCP programme follows a semester-based course structure and continuous assessment within an innovative academic curriculum following the OBE design.It containselevencore courses, two supervised field practicum, a dissertation/project and a comprehensive Viva Voce.The key features of the programme are the thrust given to the foundation topics in Psychology;Counselling and Psychotherapy;theoretical foundations of counselling; training in different psychotherapeutic techniques; and field training in real life settings under the supervision of professional counsellors.

There will be a project during the second semester to gain field/academic/research training. The students will be given an opportunity to undertake project and field practicum outside the college in association with different organisations/institutions engaged in professional counselling.

CONDUCT OF THE PROGRAMME

  • DCP is conducted in collaboration with Vathil– A Foundation for Mental Wellness, Training and Research’ (known as Vathil Foundation) situated at Kottayam.
  • It is conducted in two semesters in a period of one year under the CSS scheme with multiple entry-exit option.
    • Two Semesters spread over one academic year for obtaining a Diploma.
    • One semester (six months) for obtaining a programme certificate (Applicable for the first semester only).
    • As per the credit and hours given in the syllabus for a course certificate (not applicable for practice courses).
  • The programme is conducted in such a way that working professionals also can pursue the programme of study.
  • Forty percentage of the classes will be offered online, and the rest of the classes will take place at Vathil Foundation.
  • Online classes will be conducted in the evenings on weekdays and in-campus sessions will be at Vathil Foundation on Saturdays/Sundays/ holidays.

The required hours of Supervised Field Practicum will be arranged in organisations/institutions engaged in professional counselling service.
